How to Safeguard Your EpiPen While You're Vacationing This Summer
As you’re making your summer vacation plans, you need to ensure your EpiPen® is safe and accessible at all times. Learn how to protect it from extreme temperatures, just one of many steps you can take to maintain its effectiveness.

Summer is right around the corner, and you know what that means. The sun is out, and it’s time to use some of those saved-up vacation days for a well-deserved summer adventure.

Whether you plan to lounge by the beach, go hiking, or explore a new city, one of the last things you want to worry about is having a severe allergic reaction. Or, worse, not having a functional EpiPen® nearby if you do experience one.

An EpiPen is a lifesaver for people who are living with severe allergies. It quickly reverses the effects of anaphylaxis, which is a potentially life-threatening allergic reaction. Going on vacation without a working EpiPen can be a fatal mistake.

Dr. Patricia Gomez-Dinger, a board-certified allergist, understands how challenging it is to manage severe allergies, and you can’t do it alone.

At Advanced Allergy, Asthma, & Immunology Center PA in San Antonio and Schertz, Texas, she offers in-depth allergy testing and treatment to help you stay safe and live an active, full life.

Here, she gives you tips on protecting your EpiPen and staying safe while you’re on vacation this summer.

What to know about your EpiPen

An EpiPen contains epinephrine, which works by narrowing your blood vessels to increase blood pressure, and by relaxing the muscles in your airways to improve your breathing. It also reduces any appearance of hives and swelling.

If you’ve never used your EpiPen, it’s crucial to learn how to use it correctly before your trip. Any friends or loved ones who are traveling with you should also know how to administer it in case you can’t do so yourself.

It’s always a good idea to carry an emergency action plan with you. The plan should clearly outline your allergies, symptoms of anaphylaxis, and steps to take in an emergency in a way that anyone can understand and follow.

Tips for safeguarding your EpiPen on vacation

Your EpiPen’s safekeeping is important when you’re on vacation, of course, and especially so if you’re spending time in an unfamiliar city or country.

Keep it accessible

Your EpiPen should be easily accessible at all times. Whether you’re snorkeling or just lounging by the hotel pool, ensure your EpiPen is within reach.

Carry it in a bag or an EpiPen case that can attach to your belt or fit in your pocket. Avoid storing it in places that might be difficult to reach quickly, such as the bottom of a large bag.

Protect it from extreme temperatures

Epinephrine can degrade in extreme temperatures, reducing its effectiveness. To protect your pen, keep it within the recommended temperature range of 68°F to 77°F (20°C to 25°C).

Avoid leaving your pen in a hot car or exposing it to direct sunlight for long stretches. If you’re traveling to a hot destination, consider keeping it in an insulated case.

Bring a backup

Always carry at least two EpiPens with you when you travel. Anaphylaxis can sometimes require a second dose of epinephrine, and having a backup ensures you’re prepared for any situation.

Additionally, accidents happen, and your EpiPen could get lost or damaged. Having a spare ensures you always have this lifesaving medication when needed.

Check the expiration date

Before you leave for your trip, check the expiration dates on your EpiPens, because epinephrine loses potency over time. If your EpiPens are close to expiring, visit us to get new prescriptions before you travel.
